A note from Jeramy
Volterra is growing.
I’m excited to welcome Danielle Walker and Adrian Neyra as our first two additions to the team. Their arrival expands our expertise and our ability to support clients across a wider range of digital infrastructure opportunities and challenges.
Danielle will work across Volterra, supporting commercial operations and helping implement Volterra Commercial for our clients. Adrian joins as Director, Development, beginning with a dedicated Embedded Expert engagement supporting a client’s global development footprint.
I’m proud of the work that has brought us here. These additions give us more capacity to take on complex assignments and stay involved as our clients’ needs evolve.
This first edition of Volterra Quarterly introduces the broader business we’re building. Each quarter, we’ll share a useful perspective from our work, a closer look at a project or challenge, and developments across Volterra.
Relationship infrastructure at hyperscale
Our first success story begins with a 900+ MW campus opportunity and a practical question: who needs this capacity, and what would it take to make it useful to them?
We had worked closely with the infrastructure lead at one of the world’s leading AI labs for years. That ongoing dialogue gave us a clear understanding of the customer’s needs, including the importance of timing and a credible path to usable capacity. When we saw the opportunity, we recognized the potential fit immediately.
I sent the core site details directly to the customer’s infrastructure lead and followed with a teaser. Roughly twenty minutes later, we had confirmation of interest.
The next question was who could carry a requirement of that scale through financing and development. We brought the opportunity to a major institutional data center developer through an established senior relationship. By the next day, executive leadership was engaged and teams were organizing to evaluate the site and its economics.
Volterra remained involved across the commercial and diligence work. The customer needed confidence in delivery. The developer needed to understand the risks and capital commitments. Our client needed a credible structure and clarity on value. We helped keep those priorities connected as questions moved between organizations.
Power timing became a central challenge. We pursued utility delivery and potential behind-the-meter generation in parallel, activating established relationships with generation providers. Calls happened quickly, and indicative quotes and configurations were moving within days. Those conversations informed the broader development strategy, including the implications for land and infrastructure.
Within weeks, the process produced a multi-nine-figure institutional offer for the utility-powered core of the opportunity. The client ultimately chose a different strategic structure, and the transaction we pursued did not close.
The work created a credible institutional alternative, a meaningful benchmark for value, and a clearer understanding of customer demand and potential power pathways. I’m proud of what the teams accomplished. Our responsibility was to create options and help the client make an informed decision.
What makes an opportunity ready
The practical lesson is to begin with the customer’s actual requirement and work through what must be true to meet it. A capacity figure alone cannot explain when a project can become useful or what still stands between the opportunity and delivery.
For your next project review, start with three questions:
- What is supported today? Separate documented facts from estimates, targets, and work still underway.
- What does the next milestone depend on? Make the conditions behind capacity and delivery dates explicit.
- Who owns the next decision? Identify the person responsible, the information they need, and when a decision is required.
Those questions give landowners, developers, utilities, operators, and investors a useful basis for working together. They also help focus attention on the work that can advance the project.
Building and running the commercial function
Volterra Commercial is our embedded commercial practice for digital infrastructure businesses. It brings commercial strategy, positioning, marketing, sales and leasing, site commercialization, market intelligence, partnerships, and commercial operations into a coordinated function.
In practice, we help a company define its offering, prepare credible materials, reach the right customers and partners, qualify opportunities, and manage the work required to advance them. That includes maintaining a clear view of the pipeline, responsibilities, and decisions requiring leadership attention.
Each engagement is tailored to the company. We can strengthen an existing commercial team or provide a broader function where one is needed. We are pleased to support Mousterian across its global commercial opportunities.
The expertise your team needs
A new project, a growing workload, or a specialist challenge can create a need for expertise your team does not have today.
Embedded Experts brings experienced people into a client’s team on a fractional or dedicated full-time basis. The program supports development, design, engineering, power, site selection, commercial activities, and operations. Volterra can help identify the right person or support someone the client has already selected.
The expert works with the client on agreed priorities, while Volterra handles employment, benefits, equipment, technology, and related administration. Adrian’s initial engagement illustrates how that model can support a client’s development needs.
Introducing Volterra Ventures
Volterra Ventures extends our focus into investing in digital infrastructure and adjacent opportunities.
Our interest is in backing the infrastructure behind the next era of compute. It is a natural extension of the sectors and businesses we spend our time understanding through our advisory and commercial work.
We look forward to sharing more as investments and company announcements are ready to be discussed publicly.
Developing Volterra Intelligence
We are developing Volterra Intelligence, a market intelligence platform intended to bring market, location, utility, and facility information into a more accessible resource for digital infrastructure decisions.
The goal is to help users investigate opportunities, understand relevant conditions, and focus their next questions. Visit the website to learn more about the platform.
A clearer view of Volterra
Alongside this first newsletter, we have refreshed our website to better explain our work and the ways clients can engage us.
Advisory remains central to that work, including market and site research, power questions, and commercial strategy. Volterra Commercial provides ongoing commercial leadership and execution. Embedded Experts brings experienced people into client teams. Intelligence supports research and decision-making, while Ventures extends our participation into investment.
Whether the starting point is a site, a commercial challenge, a need for experienced support, or an emerging opportunity, we want it to be easier to understand how Volterra can help.
Let’s connect
I’ll be attending the ABS Conference, DCD Connect NoVA, and PTC. If you’ll be at any of them, please get in touch so we can find time to meet.
Thank you to everyone who has trusted us with their work, made an introduction, challenged our thinking, or helped us build. If there is a project you’re trying to advance or an opportunity we should understand, I would welcome the conversation.
