Utility Rates, Grid, and Markets

Coincident peak

Coincident peak refers to a customer's load during a larger system peak, such as a utility, RTO, or transmission-zone peak. It matters because some charges are assigned based on contribution to system peaks rather than the customer's own monthly maximum.

Congestion

Congestion occurs when transmission limits prevent the lowest-cost generation from serving load freely. It can raise local prices, create interconnection upgrade needs, and signal grid bottlenecks near attractive data center markets.

Tier II

Tier II adds redundant capacity components but still generally requires shutdowns for some maintenance and has distribution-path exposure. It is a step up from basic capacity but not concurrently maintainable.

UPS

Uninterruptible Power Supply provides short-duration power conditioning and ride-through between utility events and generator availability. UPS topology, battery chemistry, runtime, efficiency, redundancy, and maintenance are central to data center reliability.
